WASHINGTON – Chandra Levy was murdered, by means unknown, a law enforcement source said Tuesday, a disclosure that deepened the mystery behind the demise of the 24-year-old intern who disappeared more than a year ago.
The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, made the disclosure as the city’s chief medical examiner, Jonathan L. Arden, was preparing to hold a news conference to report on developments in the case.
The developments came six days after Levy’s skeletonized remains were discovered in Rock Creek Park, a sprawling urban greenspace in the heart of the nation’s capital.
Three thousand miles away in California, Levy’s parents were holding a memorial service in her hometown of Modesto.
The law enforcement source said that tests had confirmed Levy’s death as a homicide. But despite the discovery of articles of clothing as well as bones in and around an overgrown embankment in the park, it was not possible to fix the cause of her death.
