WENATCHEE — A defense lawyer says a 20-year-old Washington man who ran from a jail work crew thought he was fleeing a possible two-year sentence. But public defender Keith Howard says the maximum penalty Roman Shrader faced was just five days.
Now Shrader has been sentenced to five more months in jail after pleading guilty Wednesday in Chelan County Superior Court to second-degree escape.
Shrader had been serving time in the county jail for driving on a suspended license and possessing a small amount of marijuana. He was due for release in early June. Lawyer Howard says Shrader was worried about the penalty for violating release terms on an earlier offense.
At sentencing, Judge Lesley Allan quoted a song lyric — “Folks are dumb where I come from.” The judge told Shrader, “I’m not saying you’re dumb, but your actions here were …”
Shrader chimed in: “pretty stupid.”
