Leaders call the nation to prayer

President Bush has declared today a National Day of Prayer in remembrance of those who were killed in Tuesday’s terrorist acts. The president has also asked that the flag of the United States continue to be flown at half-staff until sunset Sunday.

In this state, Gov. Gary Locke will lead a statewide day of prayer and remembrance today from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Westlake Park in downtown Seattle. The governor asks that everyone in the state observe a minute of silence at 12:30 p.m.

"As a nation, we are wounded," Locke said. "But in the words of Abraham Lincoln, we will bind up our nation’s wounds with the strength and resolve of our people and emerge even stronger and more determined."

Several area churches also have planned services to honor the victims.

  • First Presbyterian Church plans an interfaith service today at noon at 2936 Rockefeller Ave. There will be counselors available after the service.

  • Temple Beth Or, 3215 Lombard Ave., 7:30 p.m.

  • Avodah Yeshiva Fellowship of Messianic Judaism will offer services from noon to 1 p.m. at New Beginnings Church, 2531 Oakes Ave.

  • Church of Divine Man, 2402 Summit Ave., will offer a memorial service and remembrance today from noon to 1 p.m.

  • Alderwood Community Church, 3403 Alderwood Mall Blvd., will be open to the entire community for prayer today from noon to 1 p.m.

  • First Assembly of God will be open to the community for prayers from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., 4705 Grove St.

  • Saint Mary of the Valley Catholic Church, 601 West Columbia St., will offer a Mass of peace and reconciliation today at noon. A prayer service will also be conducted in Spanish from 7 to 9 p.m.

  • First Presbyterian Church will offer a "Service of Prayer for Our Nation," 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at 1306 Lakeview Ave.

  • A remembrance ceremony for East Coast victims is planned for 1 p.m. at Flintstone Park on Bayshore Drive north of City Beach Park in Oak Harbor. Victims of the Mexican plane crash, who were traveling on a cruise to see a University of Washington football game in Miami, will be honored at the end of the ceremony.

  • Westminster Chapel,13646 NE 24th Ave. in Bellevue, will offer a service today from noon to 1 p.m.

  • A Day of Prayer and Remembrance will take place today at St. James Cathedral in Seattle. The cathedral’s 12 hours of prayer will begin at 7:45 a.m. and conclude at 7:45 p.m. Mass is at 8:15 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.
