BOISE, Idaho — Government and energy officials say the Pacific Northwest is a region rich in energy resources capable of supplying the United States and Canada with a mix of fossil fuels and renewable energy.
The challenge ahead, leaders say, is finding the right balance between oil, gas and nuclear and greener sources like wind, geothermal and biofuels.
Energy experts and government leaders from the U.S. and Canada are meeting this week in Boise as part of the Pacific NorthWest Economic Region annual conference. Energy issues are the focus of this year’s summit.
Roger Woodworth, vice president of Avista Corp., a regional utility, says the region is blessed with a wide array of energy sources and potential.
He says it’s now up to leaders from government and the private sector to figure out how best to optimize those resources.
