Ruth Milner, a state wildlife biologist, will give a presentation on great blue herons and the management of the Davis Slough heron colony at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Camano Multipurpose Center, 141 E. Camano Drive.
The Camano Island property was purchased with private donations matching Island County Conservation Futures Funds in September 2003. A recent count by the habitat management committee, headed by Milner, found the colony now has grown to 297 nests.
Although the herons’ nesting colony is a protected area without public access, a map of heron viewing sites and other birding sites on Camano Island will be available.
The free program is offered by Friends of Camano Island Parks.

Woman does time for letting dog run
Debbie Linnell of Lynnwood served three days in jail over the weekend, part of her penalty for violating a city code for letting her dog run off leash.
Her daughter, Morgan Linnell, said her brother, Christopher, also suffered as a result. The 17-year-old, who has the mental capacity of a second- grader, and the black Labrador Dakota stayed with several relatives while his mother was in jail.
“Christopher was up all Saturday night,” Morgan Linnell said. “He had a little breakdown and cried. He said he missed her so much.”
