BOTHELL – The father of an infant whose identity was stolen just weeks after he was born has helped organize a forum on identity theft.
The workshop, sponsored by the city of Bothell, will include information on current trends in identity theft, prevention tips and what to do if your identity is stolen.
The free forum will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Northshore Senior Center, 10201 E. Riverside Drive, Bothell. No registration is required.
Representatives from the state Attorney General’s Office and the Federal Trade Commission will answer questions. Bothell police and a detective from the King County Sheriff’s Office also will be there.
“We recognize that identity theft is a growing crime and problem for law enforcement, victims and businesses,” Bothell police Capt. Denise Langford said. “We want to help educate people about what we can do so more people don’t become victims.”
Presenters will talk about new laws and proposals to crack down on identity thieves, including people who steal mail and commit Internet fraud.
Police have seen more cases of identity theft and fraud.
“Sometimes it not just the number but how extensive the cases are,” Langford said.
The investigations are often time-consuming.
“They take a toll on the victims of these crimes and repercussions they can have on their credit,” Lanford said.
