NAPAVINE — Lewis County Sheriff Steve Mansfield said a deputy apparently was justified in fatally shooting a man at Napavine.
Mansfield told KING that it appears the deputy followed training in an encounter early Monday near a home where a man armed with a knife had reportedly tried to break in.
Deputy Stacy Brown said there are stab marks through the front door and through the hood of a parked pickup truck.
The sheriff’s office said the deputy saw the suspect and fired when he refused to take his hands out of his pockets and charged the deputy. The 33-year-old Napavine man died at the scene.
Brown said investigators think the man and the resident may have known each other.
