The Sno-Isle Regional Library System has planned a winter extravaganza for students during winter break and also is gearing up with the Everett Public Library to celebrate 2004 as the Year of the Book in Snohomish and Island counties.
The extravaganza will be at five of the district’s 20 branch libraries.
The event includes three programs: noisemaking with "The Noise Guy," a festive rendition of "The Nutcracker" with Snapdragon Puppets, or a class for middle- and high-schoolers in popular Manga drawing.
The Noise Guy, presented by Charlie Williams, is a selection of fractured fairy tales and silly storyboards. That program will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Oak Harbor Library, 1000 SE Regatta Drive, Oak Harbor.
The Mousecracker, presented by Snapdragon Puppets, is a rendition of Tchaikovsky’s "timeless holiday classic," said Mary Kelly, library district spokeswoman. That program will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Snohomish Library, 311 Maple Ave., and 7 p.m. at the Marysville Library, 6120 Grove St.
Middle and high school-age youth can learn to draw faces, bodies and costumes in the Manga style. That program will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW; 2 p.m. Sunday at the Freeland Library, 5495 Harbor Ave.; and 2 p.m. Monday at the Snohomish Library.
In the coming year, the Everett and Sno-Isle libraries and The Herald will sponsor a 12-month reading program beginning New Year’s Day. Each month will feature a different theme, and the libraries will offer special programs and recommend books related to those themes.
The year will wrap up with a "Two Counties, One Book" event when readers in both counties will read a single book and participate in events and forums related to that book. The title will be announced next year.
Online book discussions and other reading activities will be available at www.sno-isle.org and www.heraldnet.com.
All Sno-Isle and Everett library branches and www.sno-isle.org will have book recommendations, Kelly said.
