EVERETT — Bellingham-born Hillary Swank, best known for her Oscar-winning role as a transgender youth in "Boys Don’t Cry," is starring as a tough Air Force major in her latest movie, which will shoot its ending in Everett.
In mid-March, crews from Paramount Productions will arrive here to film the science-fiction drama "The Core." Most of the movie is being filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, except for the ending, which involves a rescue scene with an aircraft carrier.
And the closest carrier was the USS Abraham Lincoln, docked at Naval Station Everett.
But apparently the movie’s aircraft carrier scenes don’t involve Swank. In the movie, she’ll be busy in a flying pod, drilling her way to the core of the earth. Apparently, the earth has stopped spinning on its axis and Swank, an astronaut, has to save the world by helping to restart the spin.
At least, that’s what Navy Public Affairs Officer Jeanie Kitchens was told about the movie.
Film crews visited Naval Station Everett on Feb. 16 and apparently liked what they saw.
Though Swank won’t be aboard the boat during the rescue scenes, the Navy is pleased to share its big ship with the expected 18 film crew members and to give the "Abe Lincoln" a little time on the big screen.
Of course, there is a real-life war going on, so anyone entering the Navy base will need clearance, even if they are from Hollywood, Kitchens said.
"I treat them as any other group. I still meet them at the gate and escort them to the ship," said Kitchens, though there’s a certain star that could make her break the rules:
"Now, if they had Tom Selleck with them, that would be a different story," Kitchens said.
Alas, no Selleck in this flick.
"The Core" is being directed by Jon Amiel, who did "Entrapment" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much." Besides Swank, other stars include Nicole Leroux and Stanley Tucci.
