EVERETT – A Voyager Middle School student reportedly reached for a fake gun in his waistband during a confrontation with Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies on Tuesday.
Police said Wednsday the boy is fortunate that deputies used restraint and didn’t shoot him.
“He is lucky to be alive,” sheriff’s deputy Rich Niebusch said. “It could have been seen as an aggressive act.”
A school official called police about 4 p.m. Tuesday after a student reported seeing two boys, both 14, with guns on school property.
A school security officer pointed the boys out to deputies, who found them in some bushes on Fourth Avenue W., Niebusch said.
One deputy, Larry Cole, had his gun out when he approached the boys, who were carrying replica guns, Niebusch said.
Deputies yelled for the boys not to move, but one boy reached for a gun in his waistband, Niebusch said.
Deputies yelled at him again, took him to the ground and handcuffed him, he said.
The district expelled both boys pending a final decision about disciplinary measures.
Deputies confiscated the guns and continue to investigate the incident, Niebusch said.
Detectives search for suspect in luring case
EVERETT – Snohomish County sheriff’s detectives are searching for a man who reportedly tried to lure a teenage girl into his vehicle earlier this month.
The girl, 14, told police she was walking home about 4:15 p.m. March 14 when the man asked for her name. When the teen didn’t respond, the suspect repeatedly honked at her, told her to approach his car and followed her as she walked home, police said.
When the girl arrived at her apartment complex, the suspect asked her what she did on weekends. The girl pretended to go into another building, then ran for home when the man was distracted, sheriff’s deputies said.
The suspect was described as a black man in his late teens, about 6 feet 1 inch tall with a skinny build. He has a dark complexion with small dark facial scars on his cheeks. He was described as having a deep voice and wearing a red or blue baseball cap sideways and a red, short-sleeved shirt. He was driving a red, four-door passenger car that was described as dirty.
Police don’t believe he is the same man who attempted to lure two girls near Voyager Middle School earlier in the month.
Anyone with information about the incident or he suspect is asked to call the sheriff’s tip line at 425-388-3845.
Mill Creek: Domestic dispute draws police
MILL CREEK – Police surrounded a house late Tuesday night after getting reports that a man refused to cooperate with them during an investigation into a domestic dispute.
Officers were told there were weapons in the house and were concerned for the safety of the man’s daughter, who was asleep inside, Mill Creek police spokeswoman Becky Erk said.
The incident began about 11 p.m. in the 2800 block of 159th Place SE. A woman was outside with two of her children, reportedly telling officers she had been in a dispute with her husband, Erk said.
Police attempted to talk to the man and get him to come outside. When he refused, Mill Creek officers called the Snohomish County sheriff’s emergency response team and brought in a Community Transit bus for neighbors in case they were forced evacuate, Erk said.
Eventually, the young girl woke up and walked outside. The man was allowed to stay at home, because he didn’t harm or threaten anyone, Erk said. He may face a misdemeanor charge in connection with the dispute with his wife, she said.
