OAK HARBOR – A Freeland man was killed in a head-on crash Tuesday morning on Highway 20 north of Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island.
The man, identified as Roger D. Carr, 36, of Freeland was southbound in a Jeep Cherokee near Jones Road about 9:15 a.m. when he apparently crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming pickup, according to Washington State Patrol trooper K.C. Scott.
The man died at the scene of the crash. The pickup driver was taken to Whidbey General Hospital. His injuries didn’t appear to be life threatening, Scott said.
There was no indication that alcohol contributed to the crash, the trooper said. The highway was closed for about two hours while troopers investigated the accident and cleared the roadway.
Mukilteo: Police cleared in man’s death
Police didn’t cause the death of a man who was incapacitated with a stun gun a day before his death, according to Mukilteo police.
Charles H. Craig, 60, died April 30 of cardiovascular disease and pulmonary disease associated with restraint, according to the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“From our point of view, there was no criminal act,” said Mukilteo Police Chief Mike Murphy, whose department investigated Craig’s death.
The day before he died, Snohomish police were serving a court order requiring Craig to submit to a mental health evaluation. When Craig resisted, police used a stun gun, a device designed to incapacitate people with a burst of electricity.
Craig was taken to an Everett hospital for a medical examination. He was then brought to a Compass Health facility in Mukilteo, where he was restrained and later died.
No criminal charges are expected to be filed against the mental health facility, Murphy said.
Everett: No injuries in 3 a.m. boating accident
A 20-foot pleasure boat ran aground near Everett early Tuesday, but nobody was injured in the crash. Port of Everett officials reported the grounding to the Coast Guard Sector Seattle at 3 a.m. The boat was about one mile west of the city with two people aboard, a Coast Guard report said.
A Coast Guard patrol boat picked up the two people and their pet at about noon. They were taken to Everett Marina in good condition.
The Coast Guard recommends boats be fitted with a global positioning system and a VHF marine band radio. Radios with VHF signals are traceable by the Coast Guard and can transmit to other boaters in the area.
String of thefts from shop tip jars reported
Someone made off with tip jars at coffee stands and ice cream shops on Evergreen Way and at Everett Mall Way on Sunday and Monday.
Police took reports of six separate thefts during the two days. In most cases, the witnesses said the suspects were two 18- to 20-year-old men with brown or blond hair. A black getaway car was reported associated with at least four of the thefts.
Police advise business owners to empty the tip jars often or store them in secure locations.
