Gregoire wants federal flood aid for county

OLYMPIA — Gov. Chris Gregoire asked President George Bush on Monday to add Snohomish County to the growing list of counties that qualify for federal aid from flooding earlier this month.

If approved, the declaration would allow local jurisdictions to get emergency money to help pay for damage to public buildings.

Snohomish County officials expect to make a request for damage to private homes and businesses as well. They did not say when they will make that request.

“We are trying to build our numbers higher before we send it in,” said John Pennington, director of the Snohomish County Department of Emergency Management. “I think we are too low right now and would much rather do it right the first time. The big problem we have is that people are still reporting damages and, more important, they do not realize that they do not have flood insurance. The numbers are, therefore, going upward daily.”

More than $15 million in flood damage has been reported in Snohomish County to both private and public buildings, county officials said.

Mukilteo: Disguised man robs pharmacy

A man used a long curly wig and a fake mustache as a disguise when he robbed a pharmacy Friday.

The robber demanded OxyContin and ran out of the store. He made off with a small amount of the narcotic painkiller.

The robbery happened about 10 p.m. at Walgreens in the 10200 block of Mukilteo Speedway, Mukilteo police Cmdr. Chuck Macklin said.

The suspect was described as a white man in his late teens or early 20s. He is about 5 feet, 11 inches tall with a thin build. In addition to the wig and mustache, he was wearing a blue shirt, jeans, a black hat and gloves.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call 425-337-1115.

Everett: Police seek assault suspects

Police continue to search for three people who severely beat a man late Saturday.

A police officer found the man nearly unconscious near 26th Street and Lombard Avenue. A witness reported seeing two boys and a girl, all teenagers, kicking the man and then running from him, Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said.

Everett police swarmed the area in search of the teens. They blocked off roads and brought in police dogs. A helicopter from the King County Sheriff’s Office came up to assist in the search.

The Everett man, 49, was taken to a hospital. It appears his injuries were serious but his condition was not known Monday, Goetz said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the tip line at 425-257-8450.
