STANWOOD — A four-car pile-up just west of the Mark Clark Bridge on Highway 532 on Wednesday night snarled rush-hour traffic on the only route on or off Camano Island.
The pile-up began when a pickup truck was trying to make a left turn into a roadside berry stand just before 5 p.m., Washington State Patrol trooper Keith Leary said.
One person was taken to the hospital as a precaution, officials said.
It took nearly three hours for traffic to clear and begin moving normally.
Glacier Peak: Lost hiker gets help out
Crews in a Snohomish County search-and-rescue helicopter found a lost hiker on Glacier Peak on Thursday, lowered a radio to him and helped him to hike out on his own.
By Thursday evening, the man was safely off the mountain, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.
Ground crews met him on the trail and walked him back to safety, she said.
Wednesday, search teams were alerted when the man used an emergency beacon to call for help.
After trying to reach the man Wednesday, officials learned he was safe and equipped for wilderness camping.
Rescue crews resumed their search early Thursday.
The man, 28, apparently lost his map Wednesday and was navigating using a compass and a global positioning system. He was believed to be at the 7,000-foot level of the volcanic peak, which stands about 10,500 feet in eastern Snohomish County.
Glacier Peak is remote, about 50 miles east of Everett, and is noted for its long hiking trails.
Mill Creek: Officer interrupts robbery
A Kirkland man was arrested Thursday morning in connection with an armed robbery that apparently was interrupted when a Mill Creek police officer happened upon the scene.
The two boys and one girl, ages 14 and 15, were walking at 12:40 a.m. in the 2500 block of 139th Street SE, Mill Creek police spokeswoman Robin Swanson said.
Two men approached them and took one of the boy’s cell phones at gunpoint before running off as a police officer on patrol neared the area, Swanson said.
A Lynnwood police dog tracked down a pellet gun and a baseball bat before leading police to a Kirkland man, 19. That man was identified by the teenagers as the accomplice in the robbery, police said. Police are looking for another Kirkland man, 18, in connection with the incident.
No one was hurt.
Bothell: Excavators damaged in fires
Two excavators being used to clear and grade land for new construction were damaged by fire Wednesday night in Bothell.
Bothell firefighters put out the fires at the corner of 240th Street SE and Bothell-Everett Highway.
One excavator was engulfed in flames and a second excavator was just beginning to burn when firefighters arrived, Bothell fire officials said.
The excavator that had a fully-involved fire was extinguished using fire suppression foam, and the fire on the other machine was handled using dry chemical extinguishers.
There were no injuries. The cause of the fires is under investigation.
