Local Briefly: Man hikes 40 miles to get help for wife

DARRINGTON — A man hiked 40 miles to a remote Eastern Washington town to get help for his wife, who was stranded on Glacier Peak in Snohomish County.

Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies and search and rescue volunteers used a helicopter to rescue the woman off the mountain Friday. She was taken to a local hospital to be treated for a knee injury, sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

Hover didn’t know how long the woman had been on the mountain or how long it took her husband to get help.

The couple, from Westland, Ore., were at the 3,800-foot level on the north side of the peak when the woman fell and hurt her knee, Hover said. Her husband, a nurse, left his wife with food, water and equipment and went for help. The man hiked 40 miles to Stehekin, located on the northwest edge of Lake Chelan.

“She was not in any danger,” Hover said.

The man’s call for help reached sheriff’s deputies about noon on Friday. The sheriff’s helicopter crew located the woman and used a hoist to rescue her. She was at the hospital by 3 p.m., Hover said.

Edmonds: Marina badly damaged by fire

Meadowdale Marina was closed Friday after a fire caused extensive damage, officials said.

Firefighters extinguished the early morning blaze from a boat, Edmonds Fire Battalion Chief Doug Dahl said.

Crews arrived just before 7 a.m. in the 16100 block of 76th Place to find smoke coming from the marina and fire slowly spreading under the pier, he said.

It appears trespassers had started a small cooking fire inside the marina that burned through the floor, he said.

The fire remains under investigation.

Bank robbery suspect escapes from police

After a rigorous search through an apartment complex, police were unable to find a man suspected of robbing a bank Friday morning in Edmonds.

Police swarmed the Park 212 apartment complex and blocked off roads in the 7300 block of 213th Place SW after learning that the suspect of a bank robbery was seen running into the complex, Edmonds police Sgt. Don Anderson said.

A police dog traced the man’s scent into the complex, but police were unable to find the man, Anderson said. The search was called off after 5 p.m.

Seattle: 3 sentenced in pharmacy thefts

Three Snohomish County men are on their way to federal prison for their involvement in an elaborate pharmacy burglary ring.

Anthony J. Houser, 28, of Everett, Ty Nelles and David Palfrey, both 30 and from Marysville, were sentenced on Friday in U.S. District Court in Seattle.

Houser was ordered to serve a year and three months in prison for burglarizing pharmacies in Everett and Walla Walla. Nelles was sentenced to 112 years for breaking into pharmacies in Lynnwood and Red Bluff, Calif. Palfrey was ordered to serve a year behind bars for burglarizing a pharmacy in Richland. All three men will be under state supervision for three years once they’re released from prison. They also have been ordered to pay restitution to the pharmacies they burglarized.

The burglaries were done after the pharmacies were closed. One of the co-conspirators typically disabled the store’s alarm while others broke into the pharmacy and stole prescription pain medications. The burglars were paid in drugs or cash.

A dozen people have pleaded guilt in U.S. District Court in Seattle for the burglary ring and eight others have pleaded guilty to distributing the drugs.

Numerous police agencies searched for the men but were unable to find them.

The men brandished a gun and fled with some money. Sheriff’s deputies used a police dog to look for the men. Police officers from Bothell and Mill Creek and Washington State Patrol troopers joined in the search.

The first suspect is described as a white man about 5 feet, 8 inches tall. He was wearing a brown jacket, a white T-shirt, blue jeans and a baseball cap. The second suspect is a black man about 5 feet, 6 inches tall. He was wearing a black T-shirt and blue jeans.
