Local briefly: Police officer injured in crash is improving

EVERETT – Officer Suzanne Eviston, the Everett police dog handler injured along with her canine partner, Axle, continued to improve Wednesday, Sgt. Robert Goetz said.

The pair were responding to a burglary Sunday when they were struck by a man, 19, who was trying to flee. The man is jailed facing vehicular assault charges.

A recovery fund for Eviston and Axle has been opened through the Everett Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Foundation with Bank of America.

Man who rammed car, yelled slurs is sentenced

An Everett man who admitted ramming a black woman’s car and hollering racial slurs April 23 in Everett was sentenced Wednesday to five years in prison after he pleaded guilty to first-degree malicious harassment.

Philip Arthur Burns, 37, apologized to the victim, who attended the sentencing hearing in front of Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Michael Downes.

Burns has a lengthy record, including convictions of second-degree assault, harassment and residential burglary.

Bothell: Teens injured when car lands in pond

Two teenagers were injured early Thursday when their car missed a turn and went into a retaining pond, officials said.

A neighbor helped pull one of the boys from the car before rescue crews arrived, Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

The driver, 17, of Bothell, was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, she said. The passenger, also 17, of Bothell, was treated and released at Evergreen Hospital on Thursday.

The crash occurred in the 19900 block of Filbert Drive just before 4 a.m., Hover said. The car crashed through a fence and ended up upside down in a retaining pond. One boy escaped and the neighbor helped the other to safety.

The crash remains under investigation.

Machias: Deputies involved in car crash

Two Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies who work in the marine unitwere involved in a traffic collision Thursday, officials said.

A girl, 17, was driving a Honda Civic when it collided with a Ford Explorer being driven by the deputies. The accident occurred near the intersection of S. Machias Road and OK Mill Road, sheriff’s spokeswoman Rebecca Hover said.

The girl was taken by ambulance to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with serious injuries, Hover said.

The deputies were evaluated at the scene for apparent minor injuries, she said.

The crash occurred about 3:23 p.m., she said.

The deputies were towing a river-patrol boat. Earlier Thursday, they were patrolling the Snohomish and Skykomish Rivers, Hover said.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.

Snohomish: Man hurt in motorcycle crash

SNOHOMISH – A man in his 60s was hurt Thursday after his motorcycle crashed in downtown Snohomish, officials said.

The man apparently lost control of the bike about 3:20 p.m. near the intersection of 10th Street and Avenue B, said John Hinchcliffe, a battalion chief with Fire District 4 in Snohomish.

The man was taken to Providence Everett Medical Center with shoulder and other injuries, Hinchcliffe said.
