LYNNWOOD — A man died late Saturday night after his car struck a utility pole in the 5600 block of 212th Street SW during a police pursuit, according to the Lynnwood Police Department.
A man and woman passenger in the car were taken to Harborview Medical Center as a precaution, but did not have life-threatening injuries, said Shannon Sessions, a police department spokeswoman.
The accident occurred around 10:45 p.m. The driver’s name, age and hometown were not available Sunday night, Sessions said.
Two officers were investigating a stolen vehicle report shortly before the accident occurred.
When they drove near the car, the driver fled at “an excessive speed and lost control,” Sessions said.
“The car was way ahead of the officers when they came up to it,” Sessions said.
“We are investigating whether drugs and alcohol played a part,” she said.
Couple escapes as fire burns garage Fire caused more than $45,000 damage to a hobby room and garage at a home near Martha Lake late Saturday night, officials said.
The fire was reported around 11:15 p.m. at the home in the 200 block of 168th Street SE.
No one was injured and a dog was credited with alerting the couple living at the house.
“The homeowners, a man and a woman, were asleep when the fire broke out,” said Leslie Hynes, a spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1. “They told firefighters their dog’s barking alerted them that something was amiss and that’s when they discovered the fire.”
Firefighters arrived to find flames coming from the windows of a hobby room on the top level of the two-story detached garage with a roof that connects to the front porch of the main house.
Crews from fire districts 1 and 7 controlled the fire within about 10 minutes, preventing it from reaching the main living area of the house, Hynes said.
The Snohomish County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
