Local briefly: Truck and trailer catch fire, block Highway 9

SNOHOMISH — A flaming pickup truck and a travel trailer blocked Highway 9 on Monday afternoon.

A man was driving north, pulling the trailer, on the highway about 1 p.m. when he heard a loud noise, said Ron Simmons, deputy fire chief for Snohomish County Fire District 4.

The pickup began rolling backward and the trailer jackknifed across the highway. The truck caught fire and it spread to the trailer, Simmons said. It appears that the truck’s fuel line ruptured and ignited, he said.

The driver wasn’t hurt in the fire. The road was closed for about a half-hour.

Edmonds: Armed man tries robbery

Police are looking for a man who tried to rob an Edmonds pharmacy Friday afternoon.

The man, who had a black semi-automatic handgun, demanded OxyContin from two pharmacists before running away, Edmonds police Sgt. Don Anderson said.

Just before 4 p.m., the man walked into the Rite Aid Pharmacy in the 22500 block of Highway 99 and went behind the pharmacy counter, Anderson said.

He confronted two employees who were able to run away. No drugs or property was taken and no one was harmed, he said.

The man is described as white, between 20 and 30 years old, about 5 feet, 11 inches tall. He was wearing a dark hat, a blue bandana, a dark hooded jacket and white tennis shoes.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Edmonds Police Department tip line at 425-771-0212.

Marysville: Infant given OxyContin

An infant was hospitalized Wednesday after her father allegedly gave the baby OxyContin, police said.

The 9-week-old baby girl and her twin brother also showed signs of being shaken and squeezed, according to court documents.

The children now are recovering in the care of state Child Protective Services and their father is being held in jail on $100,000 bail, Marysville Police Sgt. Darin Rasmussen said.

The children’s father, a Marysville man, 31, was arrested Saturday for investigation of delivery of narcotics to an underage person and two counts of second-degree assault of a child.

The man told police he didn’t know why he gave the baby the narcotic, Rasmussen said.

The man later told police he lied when he said he put the OxyContin on the infant’s tongue, court documents said.

Another child, 2, who was living with the family also was turned over to the state’s custody, Rasmussen said.

Lynnwood: Sentence for child molestation

A Lynnwood man was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison Monday after he pleaded guilty to child rape and child molestation.

Andrew Lee Kortegard, 32, was sentenced to the high end of the sentencing range, despite argument from his attorney that a nine-year term would be more appropriate. Defense attorney Mark Mestel of Everett said the shorter term would allow Kortegard to begin therapy earlier.

Kortegard was a volunteer youth coach, but neither of the offenses involved children he coached at the Alderwood Boys &Girls Club, officials said.

Deputy prosecutor Mark Roe said other children came forward after Kortegard’s arrest, and assaults on three of them are included in the single child-molestation charge.
