HOODSPORT — Divers report an unusual number of octopuses are dying, wolf eels appear to be panting and other marine animals in the south end of the Hood Canal are showing stress.
They apparently are suffering from a low level of oxygen.
An oceanographer who heads the Hood Canal Dissolved Oxygen Program, Jan Newton, told The Kitsap Sun it doesn’t appear to be as bad as in 2006 when thousands of fish died and washed on beaches.
The low oxygen is apparently caused by decomposing plankton and poor mixing of water from the ocean.
Diving instructor Janna Nichols reported seeing the dead octopuses, panting wolf eels and sea cucumbers putting out all their tentacles.
