LYNNWOOD — The city of Lynnwood and Snohomish County Fire District 1 are moving closer toward a permanent partnership.
The two agencies plan to enter into a temporary contract starting next month. Under the proposed contract, they will begin to share a fire chief.
The fire district’s commissioners voted unanimously to approve the contract at Tuesday’s meeting. The Lynnwood City Council is expected to vote on the contract on Monday night.
The contract as drafted would last until December 2018. During that time, it’s likely the city will make a final decision on the future of its fire department.
Options include keeping the fire department as-is, annexing into District 1, or merging with District 1 into a new government body called a regional fire authority.
The latter two options would require a public vote.
