Brandon Sager, 25, of Lynnwood, had pulled over to make a call on his cell phone when he saw a fire blazing at the Eagles Landing apartments south of Everett.

Sager and his friend Joshua Lankford, 21, of Everett dialed 911 before hurrying into the apartment complex in the 12600 block of Eighth Avenue West and pounded on doors to alert tenants of the fire.

The fire destroyed two units and damaged seven others. No one was injured, but a dog died in the fire.

Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes nominated Sager and Lankford to be honored as Red Cross Real Heroes for their selfless reaction to the fire.

Sager and Lankford are among 14 people that will be honored at the Dec. 3 Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross Real Heroes Breakfast. More than 1,000 community and corporate leaders are expected to attend the 14th annual event.

The breakfast, one of the largest fundraising events in the county, will be held at the Tulalip Resort Casino Orca Ballroom, 10200 Quil Ceda Blvd., Tulalip. Doors open at 6:45 a.m. and the program begins at 7:15 a.m.

“This is the most exciting event our Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross sponsors,” executive director Chuck Morris said in a press release. “These folks sprang into action when faced with life threatening incidents. They faced down fire, frigid waters, moving vehicles and their own fears but they triumphed and became Real Heroes.”

A call for nominees circulated throughout Snohomish County earlier this year. Hundreds of county residents attend the breakfast to show their support of the local disaster relief and preparedness efforts provided by the American Red Cross Snohomish County Chapter, according to organizers.

“These heroic individuals were nominated by the public and a final list of honorees is selected by a committee of community leaders for having gone ‘above and beyond’ in exhibiting acts of selflessness,” said Kay Cramer, Red Cross development director in a press release. This year’s list of nominees was extensive, Cramer said.

“I just wish we could honor everyone who is nominated because even being nominated is a huge honor in and of itself,” she said.

The recipients are being honored in the following categories: law enforcement, river rescue, medical hero, adult and youth good Samaritan and fire rescue.

Seats for the free Real Heroes Breakfast can be reserved by contacting Kay Cramer at 425-740-2324 or cramerk@snohomishcounty.redcross.org.
