Lynnwood man shot by intruder in motel room

LYNNWOOD – A 45-year-old man was shot in the abdomen early Wednesday and detectives with the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office were searching for the gunman.

The shooting happened at 2:20 a.m. Wednesday at a motel in the 16000 block of Highway 99 near Lynnwood. The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.

The victim’s wife partially opened the door to their unit when someone knocked. The suspect – described as 6 feet tall, wearing a ski mask, a dark ski jacket and dark pants – then forced the door open and fired a single shot.

A 40-year-old man was questioned but later released by sheriff’s detectives.

The incident is under investigation by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit.

With New Year’s weekend approaching, the Washington State Patrol is reminding motorists they’ll be “out in force” again with both marked and unmarked patrol cars, targeting speed, aggressive drivers and those not wearing seat belts.

“We want people to have a safe and enjoyable New Year’s weekend,” Capt. James Lever said. “We want to remind people to plan ahead. Have a designated driver, or call a friend or taxi to get you home safely.”

The effort includes a new night emphasis enforcement team. Money from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission is helping fund extra troopers.

A 24-year-old woman from Monroe was critically injured Wednesday when a sport utility vehicle collided with the van she was riding in, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The woman was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Up to 10 other people from the two vehicles were taken to Providence Everett Medical Center’s Colby Campus or Valley General Hospital in Monroe, trooper Keith Leary said.

The collision happened about 4:40 p.m. between Skykomish and the summit of Stevens Pass. The van was traveling east when it reportedly lost control and crossed into the oncoming lane, where it was struck broadside by the SUV, Leary said.

It was snowing lightly when the accident happened. The road was covered with compact snow and ice, Leary said.

The accident is under investigation.
