Happy International Women’s Day! This post is about a special woman in Lynnwood, Christine Umayam.
For her work with nonprofit organization Child United, Christine has been named among 20 finalists for the Citizen Service Before Self award. The Congres
sional Medal of Honor Society honors three people across the country with this prestigious annual award.
Christine founded Child United in 2007 after taking a trip to the Philippines and seeing so many families living in poverty. She quit her corporate job to start a nonprofit organization. Since then, Christine and a team of volunteers provided books, clothes, toys and school supplies to thousands of children in the Philippines, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Christine teamed up with local organizations in those countries, so she knows where donations are going. She also has gone to the Philippines herself to distribute supplies. She has family there.
I wrote about Child United in February, when the group was preparing its latest shipment of donations.
The Congressional Medal of Honor Society is made up of the Medal of Honor recipients. Each of the finalists for the Citizen Service Before Self award has a remarkable story. You can read about them here. The winners will be announced March 21.
Good luck, Christine!
