LYNNWOOD — It was shortly after 3 a.m. The Lynnwood-area woman was nearing her front door when she heard the footsteps behind her.
The bandit wielded a metal object, believed to be a crowbar, and demanded her purse.
She told Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies that she was struck in the face several times after she screamed for help. The woman, 55, did not know her attacker.
The man ran off with what turned out to be her laptop and the bag that went with it, according to court papers.
Her husband heard her calls for help, bolted out of bed and, without shoes, gave chase. He got close enough, he told a deputy, to get a good look at the suspect.
The drama unfolded Monday morning outside of Lynnwood as the woman arrived home. She often works late night shifts at a job in Shoreline.
Deputies using a police dog tracked down a suspect who both the woman and her husband identified as the assailant. The Lynnwood man, 30, was booked into the Snohomish County Jail for investigation of first-degree robbery, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a synthetic narcotic. A judge set bail at $250,000 Tuesday.
Authorities believe a second suspect might have been waiting in a car nearby.
As deputies and the woman’s husband gave chase, the man was reported to have jumped fences north of 150th Street SW. He was arrested a block away. A records check revealed he already had a state Department of Corrections felony warrant for his arrest.
In front of the woman’s home, deputies found “a trail of mail” that led from the woman’s car to the road. Also found was the woman’s laptop. In the middle of the street in front of the home was a large metal crowbar with a laptop charging cable next to it.
The woman was taken to a hospital for medical attention.
