GRANITE FALLS – A 50-year-old Machias area man was killed Sunday afternoon in an all terrain vehicle (ATV) accident.
The man, whose name was not released pending notification of family, was killed when his ATV landed on him and pinned him against a tree.
Snohomish County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen said the man and two other men were riding ATVs on P5000 Road, an area known for ATV riding.
The three were following each other back to load their ATVs in their trucks when the third man’s ATV hit a curb to the right and ran off the road to the left. He fell down a 14-foot embankment and hit a tree with the ATV landing on him.
Before the impact he yelled for help and the two other men with him turned around, but not in time to help.
The three men were employed at Boeing and were friends, Jorgensen said.
The area is off the Menzel Lake Road in the Granite Falls area, near Lake Roesiger.
Jorgensen said the accident is the second fatality involving the use of an ATV this month.
The sheriff’s office was just recently informed of a 59-year-old man who was driving an ATV and was attempting to negotiate a turn in the 15900 block of Burn Road on Sept. 14 when the man crashed into a barbwire fence.
Jorgensen said he suffered fractures and other injuries, but did not seek medical attention until Sept. 19, when he went to his physician for pain medication.
The man died that same day, she said. An autopsy has been performed and results are expected to be released later confirming the exact cause of death.
