EVERETT — A man accused of stabbing his grandmother multiple times with a kitchen knife told detectives he’d been taking directions from the voices in his head.
The victim, 58, reported that her grandson had attacked her with a knife shortly after 4 a.m. Monday. She’d been sleeping in her home near the 2200 block of 196th Street SW. She was listed in critical condition with stab wounds to her body, arms, hands and neck, according to a police report.
A judge Tuesday set bail at $500,000 after determining there was probable cause to keep Bjorn V. Anderson in custody. He was arrested for investigation of attempted first-degree murder and booked into the Snohomish County Jail.
The 19-year-old Bothell-area man was living with his grandmother.
Anderson allegedly told detectives that he’d recently been given a 15-day notice from a management company to leave his grandmother’s home. He also said he was furious with his grandmother for what he considered her annoying habits and her failure to provide for him and help him with his problems. A police report indicated Anderson could have mental health issues.
The suspect allegedly said he was awakened by his grandmother around midnight and couldn’t go back to sleep. That’s when he reportedly decided that the best course of action was to “get rid of her” and he then found the biggest knife in the kitchen.
He told detectives he was in a haze during the stabbing but remembers seeing “blood everywhere.”
He also said he was trying to kill his grandmother so he would have a direction in his life and a place to go, court papers said. He said he has a “hunger for blood” that he attributes to the voices in his head.
After the assault, he reportedly put on his shoes and coat and went outside to some bushes nearby where he waited until he was contacted by deputies.
Deputies said several neighbors heard the victim screaming “Help” and “No” before the assault.
