PORT ORCHARD — A Washington man already charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend has been charged with attempted first-degree murder in an assault on a fellow Kitsap County Jail inmate.
The Kitsap Sun reported that David Kalac is accused of using a piece of cardboard to keep his cell door from locking properly, then going to another cell, pulling the victim off his bunk and stomping on the man’s head. The inmate was able to call for help Dec. 9 by pushing an emergency button in the cell. The victim suffered bruises and cuts.
The newspaper reported that Kalac was charged Friday in the jail assault. Arraignment is scheduled Jan. 6.
Kalac has pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in the death of Amber Lynn Coplin. She was found dead Nov. 4 at their apartment in Port Orchard. Gruesome photos were posted on an Internet message board. He was arrested in Oregon.
Investigators believe the assaulted inmate was a friend of Coplin.
