EVERETT — An Everett man, 55, was arrested Tuesday night in connection with an arson at his former girlfriend’s house.
He had made threats to kill the woman in recent days, according to court papers. The pair have adult children in common, according to Everett police. The woman, 50, was trying to obtain a protection order. Police had been called to the home hours before the fire.
The man is accused of starting the fire around 6 a.m. Tuesday at the front porch and door of the woman’s home along Poplar Street. The woman was home at the time and was trapped before she escaped the flames. The home had only one exit, police said. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
Officers found the man downtown that evening. He was booked for investigation of first-degree arson.
Bail was set at $500,000 during a brief hearing Wednesday in Everett District Court. He was forbidden from having contact with the woman. The suspect has felony history in another state, lawyers said in court.
The newspaper generally does not name people before they are charged.
