EVERETT — A south Snohomish County man with a history of mental illness has been arrested for investigation of hitting his mother on the top of her head with a hammer.
The suspect, 30, allegedly admitted assaulting his mother Thursday evening, saying, “I thought she was the adversary of mankind.”
The man’s father called 911 to report the assault and that his son was having a mental health episode, according to a police report.
The victim, who lives near Woodinville, was taken to a Kirkland hospital.
Deputies were told that the suspect has paranoid schizophrenia and other mental health issues.
The victim told deputies that she briefly blacked out after the assault. She also reported feeling tingling in her hand, which also appeared to have been hit with the hammer, according to the police report.
The suspect reportedly emerged from a hallway with the hammer and confronted his mother. He allegedly told her, “You can’t be allowed to live.”
The suspect’s father found the man standing over the woman with the hammer. He coaxed his son out to the front porch. That’s where he convinced him to hand him the hammer.
Deputies described the weapon as “a very large construction hammer with some fresh blood on it.”
The suspect was arrested for investigation of second-degree domestic violence assault.
