LYNNWOOD – An Edmonds man who attempted a carjacking in the Alderwood mall parking lot Wednesday night also failed in another endeavor – to outrun police, Lynnwood police spokeswoman Shannon Sessions said.
The 27-year-old man reportedly has been jailed for investigation of attempted robbery and attempting to elude police.
A Mukilteo man told police he was sitting in his car with a Lynnwood woman about 11:35 p.m. Wednesday when he was approached by a man brandishing a large knife, The Mukilteo man didn’t wait around. He drove away while calling 911 on his cell phone. The alleged robber jumped in his own car and gave chase.
A nearby Lynnwood police officer got the call and headed to Alderwood mall. He spotted two cars speeding through the parking lot.
The officer flipped on his lights and sirens. That’s when the suspect’s car sped onto 196th Street SW, Sessions said.
The pursuit in Lynnwood reached speeds of 70 mph and topped 95 mph once the fleeing driver reached I-5. The car nearly crashed when the driver left the freeway near 164th Street SW, Sessions said.
The pursuit ended when two Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies forced the man to spin out by nudging the back end of his car. Once stopped, he surrendered peacefully, Sessions said.
Police found a knife, an electronic stun gun and an empty bottle of whiskey in the back of the man’s car, the police report said.
