SPOKANE — Police say a 17-year-old arrested in a brutal assault of a woman on a Spokane trail may also be responsible for an earlier killing.
Officers responded Thursday afternoon when they got a 911 call that a man had jumped into the Spokane River after attacking a woman who was walking near the Centennial Trail by Mission Park.
When they arrested him, they found he matched the description of the suspect in in the May 3 killing of Sharlotte McGill. McGill was stabbed at the entrance to a different trail, and was able to give police a description of her attacker before she died.
Thursday’s assault left a woman in her 40s with obvious injuries to her face and head. A witness followed the suspect and was able to tell police where he had gone. They found him hiding in the bushes along the river bank.
