KENT — King County prosecutors have charged a 25-year-old man with second-degree murder in connection with a drive-by shooting that killed a 1-year-old girl.
Kent Police Chief Ken Thomas said at a news conference Monday that DeMartrae Kime, a gang member, targeted the girl’s father out of retaliation. Thomas says Kime believed the girl’s father was a member of a rival gang that he blamed for the fatal shooting of a friend.
Malijha Grant died after she shot in the head April 16 as she rode in a car with her parents in Kent.
King County Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg said authorities believe at least one more person is responsible for the drive-by shooting.
In September, Kime pleaded guilty in federal court in Seattle to unlawful possession of a firearm.
It wasn’t clear whether Kime has an attorney on the new charges. A message left with his federal public defender was not immediately returned.
