An Everett man with a long history of drug crimes was charged with a felony Tuesday for abandoning his 2-year-old for hours in an apartment while he went in search of cocaine.
Darius A. Fields, 24, committed second-degree abandonment of a dependent person Saturday when he left his toddler son alone in a third-floor apartment with an open door leading to a balcony while he bought drugs and got high for six hours, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Craig Matheson said.
The child’s mother was at work.
In Superior Court papers, Matheson said police learned the boy had been abandoned after Fields returned home and the child was gone.
Police learned that the apartment’s manager had taken the child with her after checking on the boy’s welfare and discovering him alone and covered in feces.
Fields has felony convictions for drug possession and drug delivery starting in 1999. He was wanted on an Illinois arrest warrant for cocaine delivery when he was arrested, Matheson said.
“I messed up big time,” Fields allegedly said as he was being driven to jail.
