A man was charged Tuesday in Everett District Court with one count of second-degree arson following fires Thursday in two vacant houses near his south Edmonds home.
Kenneth William Sloan, 20, was being held on $500,000 bail.
Witnesses spotted Sloan watching firefighters at one of the fires, and told officials they had seen him near an empty house minutes before smoke was seen coming from it. A fire officer and a witness followed Sloan when he left the fire scene and drove into the parking lot of a nearby apartment complex, court documents say.
Firefighters extinguished the blazes in the 23500 block of 84th Avenue W. and the 8200 block of 234th Street SW.
Sloan is scheduled to appear in Snohomish County Superior Court today for a bail hearing.
