BAKER CITY, Ore. — A Baker City man who killed a wolf known as OR-22 while coyote hunting has been charged with taking the life of a threatened or endangered species.
Harney County prosecutors also charged Brennon D. Witty with hunting with a centerfire rifle without a big game tag on Oct. 6 in the Crane Prairie area of Grant County.
The collared wolf was part of the Umatilla River pack that had moved into new territory. Witty had reported the incident to state officials who found the wolf’s body on private property.
The Oregonian reported both charges are misdemeanors that each carry a maximum sentence of one year in jail and/or a fine of $6,250. Witty will be arraigned Dec. 2.
It’s illegal to shoot wolves in Oregon with limited exceptions.
