Man charged with vehicular homicide
Prosecutors on Thursday charged an Everett man with vehicular homicide for a crash that killed a 20-year-old man last month.
Enedino Margarito Mendez, 21, is accused of driving drunk March 22 when he plowed into the back of an unoccupied work truck parked on the shoulder of I-5 near Everett.
Marcos Lopez-Silva, 20, a passenger in Mendez’s pickup, died at the scene of the crash.
A witness reported seeing a Mazda truck weaving back and forth on southbound I-5 about 2 miles before the crash. The pickup drifted into the right shoulder, where it collided with an abandoned work truck parked up against the guardrail, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Tobin Darrow wrote.
When the State Patrol arrived, Mendez was in the driver’s seat, moaning. The trooper reported smelling alcohol coming from him. He also saw some empty beer bottles in the truck, Darrow wrote.
A sample of Mendez’s blood was taken at the hospital and tested at the state crime lab. His blood alcohol level was a .15 — almost twice the legal limit, Darrow wrote.
Mendez remains in jail on $250,000 bail.
