MARYSVILLE — A driver was spotted Thursday night going the wrong way on I-5.
Troopers responded just after 8 p.m. to several reports of a vehicle going south on northbound lanes of I-5 near Smokey Point, Washington State patrol trooper Keith Leary said.
There were no collisions and nobody was hurt.
The driver was a 37-year-old Sedro-Woolley man, whose 13-year-old son was also in the car, Leary said.
Troopers stopped the vehicle just south of 116th Street NE, Leary said.
The driver said another vehicle had been following him and he was trying to get away, Leary said. The driver got on the wrong side of the freeway in order to turn around.
“He just decided to make a U-turn on the freeway … a very unsafe decision,” Leary said.
He said no alcohol or drugs were involved. The man was cited for reckless driving and released.
“This was a decision we don’t want people to make,” Leary said. “We are very fortunate there were no vehicles hit.”
Leary said drivers who believe they are being followed should get to a well-lit area where other people are present or call 911 if they have a cell phone.
