TACOMA — Jurors have convicted a 32-year-old man of first-degree murder in the March 2009 stabbing death of a Tacoma cab driver who came to America to escape the violence in his native Somalia.
The Pierce County Superior Court jury convicted Jaycee Fuller of Tacoma on Wednesday in the death of 22-year-old Mohamud Ahmed.
Fuller is a former cab driver himself. He faces a standard-range sentence of 22 years to 28 years, eight months when he is sentenced March 12.
Prosecutor Mark Lindquist contended Fuller slashed Ahmed’s throat and stabbed him in the chest during a robbery attempt.
Lindquist said the key evidence was a stocking cap found near the crime scene. It had Ahmed’s blood on the outside and Fuller’s DNA on the inside. Fuller got the hat when he worked at a restaurant in 2006.
Prosecutors told jurors that Fuller was unemployed and desperate for cash.
Public defender John Chin said detectives found no evidence of a robbery and no evidence that Fuller was inside the cab.
