LAKEWOOD — Police in Lakewood say officers fatally shot a man who had climbed up 25 feet to hide in a pile of wood at a lumber yard.
The News Tribune reported that Lt. Chris Lawler says police responded Tuesday afternoon to investigate reports of a suspicious person at Pinnacle Lumber and Plywood. Multiple 911 callers had reported seeing a man running before climbing a fence into the lumber yard. Lawler says police had not been pursuing the man and it wasn’t clear why he entered the yard.
Two officers found the man atop a 25-foot-tall stack of lumber. Lawler says they reported that the man was reaching into his pocket. That’s when they opened fire, wounding him. He was taken to a hospital but Lawler said Tuesday night that the man had died from his injuries. He was not immediately identified.
The police spokesman said he did not know whether the man was armed.
Lawler says the two officers have both worked at Lakewood since 2004. They are on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
