LEAVENWORTH — A 28-year-old shoplifting suspect who jumped into the Wenatchee River near Leavenworth to run from Chelan County deputies has likely drowned.
Chelan County sheriff’s Sgt. Kent Sisson said Sunday that there’s “a high probability” the man drowned. There have been no sightings of him in two days.
He was last seen Friday afternoon, when he ran from deputies who were looking for him over a theft of two liquor bottles from a Leavenworth grocery store.
The man, who is homeless, tried to swim across the swollen river but was swept downstream. At one point, he was spotted trying to hold onto a boulder several yards down river.
On Saturday, rescuers searching by helicopter and on the water for a second day were unable to find him.
