EVERETT — A 58-year-old man in a wheelchair died Saturday night after he was struck by a car while in an unmarked crosswalk on Highway 99.
Washington State Patrol troopers were called to Highway 99 near Gibson Road about 10 p.m., trooper Keith Leary said.
The man, who was living at an assisted living facility on Gibson Road, died at the scene, Leary said.
Troopers determined the driver of the 2005 Kia Sedona, a 26-year-old Everett man, was not at fault, Leary said.
“(The victim) didn’t judge the distance between himself and the car. The driver never saw him,” he said.
The nearest marked crosswalk from the intersection is about a mile away, Leary said.
“It’s a very unfortunate accident,” he said.
Washington State Patrol was working Sunday with the county medical examiner’s office to identify the victim’s relatives, Leary said.
Pedestrians need to be extremely careful on unmarked crosswalks, Leary said. That includes wearing bright or reflective clothing when on the road at night.
