SULTAN — A man fired a rifle at a Snohomish County sheriff’s deputy Friday and then reportedly turned the gun on the himself.
The deputy wasn’t injured and didn’t return fire, Snohomish County sheriff’s Lt. Jeff Brand said.
The man, believed to be in his early 60s, was rushed by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with life-threatening injuries. The man’s identity was not released and his condition wasn’t immediately available.
Detectives were called to investigate the incident that occurred around 3 p.m. near the end of Dogwood Court, a dead-end just east of Sultan.
Someone called 911 to report a man with a gun. When the deputy arrived, the man fired the rifle at the deputy before shooting himself, Brand said.
The shootings took place outside an abandoned home.
“The deputy is upset,” Brand said. Someone fired a weapon at him and then attempted to take their own life.
“That’s going to affect anyone,” he said.
The deputy wasn’t immediately placed on leave. Commanders are expected to review the incident, Brand said.
