EVERETT — A man believed to be from Everett was in serious condition Tuesday after losing his left leg and right arm when he was apparently struck by a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train near the new Everett Station on Smith Avenue.
The 34-year-old man, whose name was not released, also suffered a fractured right leg. He was being treated in the intensive care unit at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where he improved from critical to serious condition Tuesday afternoon.
The accident occurred about 3 a.m. when a janitor at Everett Station heard someone yelling for help.
It would appear that the man was struck somewhere south of the station and dragged for a distance, police spokesman Boyd Bryant said
Burlington Northern officials stopped two trains, but found no evidence that a pedestrian had been struck. But the investigation is continuing, railway spokesman Gus Melonas said.
Coupeville
Deck railing fails: A 48-year-old man and his 44-year-old wife fell about 14 feet Tuesday afternoon after a railing on their deck broke.
The two were standing on the deck outside their Coupeville home when the railing gave way, said Coupeville Deputy Marshal David Penrod. The two landed on cement, and the man broke his arm.
Both were taken to Whidbey General Hospital, and he was later transported to Harborview Medical Center.
Shoreline
Fircrest worker fired: A 33-year-old Marysville man charged with raping a developmentally disabled woman at the Fircrest School in Shoreline has been fired, officials said Tuesday.
Kenneth Bines, who was removed from his job as an attendant after the allegations surfaced in January, was suspended without pay Monday, pending his firing effective May 21, according to the state Department of Social and Health Services.
Bines is charged with second-degree rape in King County Superior Court. He is accused of raping a female resident of the school, which is home to 274 adults with developmental disabilities. The investigation began in January after a DSHS employee found a used condom in the woman’s room. Bines’ DNA matched the DNA found in the condom, police said.
Bines has 30 days to appeal his dismissal to the Washington State Personnel Appeals Board.
Snohomish
Man shot: A man in his early 20s was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center after he accidentally shot himself in the thigh Tuesday night.
The man was parked in front of Hagen Vegetables in the 8200 block of Marsh Road in south Snohomish County when he accidentally shot himself. The incident was reported at 6:22 p.m. He was alone in the car.
"He had (the gun) in his car and how it went off, I don’t know," said Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Jan Jorgensen.
The man’s condition was not available Tuesday evening.
