PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland’s police chief says a 61-year-old man opened fire on police in Southeast Portland on Sunday morning, wounding two officers.
Chief Mike Reese says two officers were conducting a routine welfare check at the home, when the suspect opened fire through the front door. The officer who was shot at the front door received minor injuries.
Reese says another police officer responding to the scene had set up in a nearby park and was shot by the suspect with a scope rifle. That officer was hit in the lower abdomen and is in surgery at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center in Portland. His condition was not immediately available.
Hostage negotiators talked the man out of the home and police took him into custody.
