EVERETT — Police late on Saturday were trying to determine what led to the shooting that left a man seriously hurt.
Shots rang out in a parking lot in the 8400 block of Evergreen Way near at E. Casino Road about 6:30 p.m., Everett police Sgt. Robert Goetz said. A man in his 40s was found shot in the chest.
It was not immediately known how many times he was shot.
Medics rushed him to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He was listed in serious condition Saturday evening.
Investigators believe a confrontation occurred between the man who was shot and the gunman, Goetz said.
The suspect, described as a tall, skinny black man, may have fled the scene in a red or maroon sport utility vehicle.
“The motive is unknown,” Goetz said. “We don’t know yet if it was a random incident or if he was targeted.”
Detectives from Everett’s Major Crimes Unit were called to investigate.
The parking lot was blocked off with yellow police tape. Detectives were gathering pieces of clothing and other evidence scattered around the place where the man was shot. About a dozen bystanders looked on.
Jeff Rexroad, 26, of Everett was inside the nearby Biomat Donor Center when he heard gunshots.
“I just heard: ‘pop, pop, pop,’” he said.
Rexroad left the building. He noticed a friend’s car parked outside. Rexroad got a bad feeling when he saw a man being wheeled away on a gurney.
Minutes later, Rexroad found out that his friend had been shot. He was on the phone with the man’s family trying to find out how he is doing.
“I just hope he will be OK,” Rexroad said.
