SNOHOMISH — Police late Wednesday night were closing in on a suspected gunman in a shooting that left a Snohomish man with serious injuries.
The shooting was reported around 5:30 p.m. near Christ the King Lutheran Church along Pine Avenue in Snohomish. A man in his early 20s was taken by hel
icopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle from Harvey Airfield.
Police believe the man was shot several times at close range, possibly by a .22-caliber handgun, Snohomish police Cmdr. A.J. Bryant said.
Snohomish police and Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies, along with other law enforcement officers, set up shop at multiple locations in town as the investigation developed.
They had a description of a shooting suspect, along with a description of an associated vehicle, to go on. That led them to a home along 20th Street, off of Bickford Avenue.
“We are being very cautious because there is a firearm involved,” Bryant said early in the night.
Police believed one of the suspects lived in the home or on a trailer on the property, Bryant said. He couldn’t say how many suspects there were.
The gunman may have been accompanied by a woman, police said.
Wednesday afternoon was quiet until a flurry of police cars converged in Snohomish, said Jeremy Nausin, a youth director at Christ the King Lutheran Church.
The parking lots at the church were empty when he left at 5 p.m., he said. He was called back within minutes.
The church has had some issues with vandalism but never violence, Nausin said.
Churchgoers stopped and stared at the crime scene as they carried in potluck dishes for a church supper.
A handful of pale teenagers were behind the crime scene tape near the church talking with police shortly after the shooting. A chaplain escorted them from the scene. One young woman sat on a curb and sobbed while the others gestured wildly at possible evidence on the ground, including what looked to be a jacket and a coffee cup.
