JERSEY CITY, N.J.— Authorities say a man delivering sheet rock at a construction site was killed when a tape measure fell 50 stories and hit him on the head.
The Jersey Journal reports that the accident occurred Monday morning in Jersey City.
Carly Baldwin, a spokeswoman for the city’s public safety department, says the 1-pound tape measure became dislodged from a worker’s belt on the 50th floor and struck construction equipment about 10 to 15 feet from the ground. It then ricocheted and struck the man, who wasn’t wearing a hard hat.
The man was taken to a hospital, where he died. His name hasn’t been released.
Officials say two 50-story residential towers and an attached hotel are being built at the site of the accident.
