LYNNWOOD – A man was being treated for smoke inhalation after his house caught fire Thursday.
The man, in his 70s, told firefighters that he woke up and saw a ring of flames around a portable heater in the living room. The fire was reported just before 6 a.m. in the 17800 block of 32nd Avenue.
The man attempted to smother the fire and put it out with a bucket of water but his efforts were not successful, Snohomish County Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes said.
The house was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. The roof collapsed, and the two-story house was destroyed, Hynes said.
The county chapter of the American Red Cross was providing emergency shelter, food, clothing and household items for the man.
