PATEROS — Authorities say a Chelan man had his two young children with him in his car when he tried to elude police Tuesday night, and then left them behind while he ran away from a deputy.
Douglas Atchison, 31, did tell police his 4-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl were in the car after a deputy found him under a vehicle and arrested him, said Okanogan County Undersheriff Joe Somday.
Deputy Gisberth Gonzalez first tried to stop Atchison at about 10:30 p.m. when radar recorded him going 75 mph on Highway 97 — 15 mph over the speed limit, Somday said. Atchison did not stop, but eventually pulled into downtown Pateros and led the deputy on a foot chase.
Atchison was booked into the Okanogan County Corrections Center on suspicion of reckless endangerment, driving with a revoked license and without a required ignition interlock, possession of drug paraphernalia and no proof of insurance.
Child Protective Services took the children into custody, Somday said.
