Man who shot deer, boy sued by boy’s family

GRANTS PASS, Ore. — An Oregon man who shot at a deer but instead wounded a boy waiting at a school bus stop is being sued by the boy’s family.

The Medford Mail Tribune reported that the lawsuit, filed on behalf of Ulises Hernandez in Josephine County, seeks $270,000 damages. The suit claims 47-year-old hunter Darren D. Green was negligent and impaired.

The incident happed in October 2011 when Green, who lives across from the bus stop, shot and killed a deer in his front yard. One bullet also struck the boy in the leg.

Green pleaded guilty last year and was convicted on a charge of negligent wounding. He was sentenced to 10 days in custody, a year of probation and his hunting privileges were suspended for 10 years.

The suit says medical bills for boy’s care were about $40,000, with another $10,000 anticipated.
