SEATTLE – A reported gang member who shot and killed a sheriff’s deputy in White Center has been implicated in the killing of another man about five hours earlier, authorities said Monday.
Ballistics tests show the same gun was used in both crimes, the King County Sheriff’s Office said.
Deputy Steven Cox was shot in the head early Saturday while interviewing partygoers at a residence in the neighborhood south of West Seattle. The gunman, Raymond Porter, was quickly killed in a shootout with other deputies.
At the time of the shootings, detectives were working a case in nearby SeaTac, involving a Seattle man who had been shot in the head. Shell casings recovered from the scene showed that they had been fired from the same gun that killed Cox.

The Kitsap Sun newspaper is cutting nine full-time positions from its newsroom, a reduction of about 20 percent, as readers and advertisers continue to move to online news sources.
The phased-in reductions will start in January, with severance offers for staff and managers who voluntarily resign, publisher Mike Levi said in a report Monday evening on the paper’s Web site.
